The art of Bonsai visits the Company’s Garden

The City’s Recreation and Parks Department is partnering with the
Western Cape bonsai fraternity by hosting a two-day festival on 28 and 29
October 2023 at the Company’s Garden. This popular event, in its 11th year,
will have bonsai trees on display and various other related activities
The exhibition opened earlier today and offers a unique outdoor experience for nature enthusiasts, art lovers and families. The Consul General of Japan in Cape Town, Mr. Katamoto Masahiro, attended the exhibition.
The festival's theme this year, "Bonsai in Africa," focuses on the Tree of the Year - Buddleja Saligna, commonly used for bonsai. African-style trees and indigenous trees have been gaining popularity in bonsai. By embracing this theme, the bonsai exhibition becomes a platform to appreciate the beauty of indigenous South African trees, promoting environmental conservation and celebrating the ancient art of bonsai.As a well-known and popular open space in the central city, the Company's Garden is an ideal place to have such a unique event. Attendees have the opportunity to explore an inspiring collection of meticulously crafted miniature trees. Each bonsai tree tells a story of tradition, patience and artistry, offering not only an exhibition but also a chance to learn and find inspiration in the delicate practice of nurturing these exquisite living sculptures.
In addition, the festival addresses the many challenges posed by urbanisation, underscoring the importance of preserving and planting trees. Bonsai offers a unique way to promote a greener urban landscape and shift perspectives.
Key highlights of the event include a showcase of an extensive collection of impeccably crafted bonsai trees and a competition for budding bonsai enthusiasts to exhibit their talents and offer recreational activities for children.
